Western Languages and Literatures

About

At the Department of Western Languages and Literatures, we examine how narratives shape both the world and our perception of it. Our students are taught to read closely, think critically, and write with both analytical rigor and creative expression. Through a comprehensive curriculum, we aim to explore how a text's form can deepen its meaning, understand the interplay between literary expression and historical contexts, and recognize how literature both reflects and challenges power structures.

While our curriculum prioritizes English-language literature from around the world, we are equally committed to providing a broad liberal arts education. In this regard, we encourage students to make interdisciplinary connections and informed choices, while also nurturing reading, writing, and speaking skills that will support them in diverse career paths. Our graduates have leveraged these skills to build successful careers across academia, the arts, civil society, government, and various industries, including advertising, media, digital content production, human resources, and marketing.

The Department of Western Languages and Literatures offers an undergraduate program in English Language and Literature, along with graduate programs in English Literature (M.A. and Ph.D.). At the undergraduate level, in addition to double major programs, two certificate programs are available to students.
